    Miami Herald: UM Medical School Feels the Squeeze

    March 6, 2010. The University of Miami is affected by Jackson Health System’s financial woes.

    Among other things, Jackson Health System is behind $52 million in its payments to UM under its operating agreement, according to a recent audit by Ernst & Young.

    “We are very much a part of their operations,” said William Donelan, the medical school’s chief operating officer, “and we know at the end of the day we will be affected” by Jackson’s plans to shrink operations to deal with an anticipated deficit of $229 million this fiscal year.

    In the previous fiscal year, ending Sept. 30, 2008, Jackson was $24 million behind in its paymentsto the university underthe operating agreement in which UM doctors treat indigent patients atJackson Memorial Hospital and teach the graduateresidents training there.

    For the year ending Sept. 30, 2009, Jackson was $52.4 million behind.
